What is the reason of the Turkish people’s protests?

This time ”the woman in red” is not the object of love but the igniting power of the strongest ever protests in Turkey.Against the objection of many, the Turkish goverment is determined to tear down the symbols of Istanbul and build shopping malls in their places.First it was one of the first movie theaters of istanbul, ”Emek Sineması”.She was 83 years old when she was taken apart. Despite the protesters guarding it, sleeping in front of its doors for weeks . Then it was the turn of Istanbul’s main square TAKSIM SQUARE.The one and only Opera House there has already been closed down some years ago with the promise of making a new and better place.Nothing has been done so far. Gradually the goverment decided to tear down the park / the trees which gave a breathing space among all the hustle and bustle to thousands passing through the square every day.The activists determined to prevent this and protect the trees peacefully camped on the grounds singing songs and watering tress for some time. Then on the early morning at about 4 a.m. last wednesday the police force attacked the park with tear gas. That’s where “the woman in red” comes into the scene. On the same morning the police burnt all the tents.on that same morning thousands going to work/scholsa through Taksim Square couldn’t breath, couldn’t proceed due to tear gas. That’s waht triggered the rest.As a Turkish journalist Cüneyt Ozdemir puts it “our pressure cooker democracy exploded”.

To give the activits support people against violence rushed to Taksim Gezi Park, then came more tear gas and more protests.and on the night of friday at about 2 a.m. people were awakened from their beds by the sound of horns and banging of pots and pans,an impromptu protest “to make noise”, organized through facebok and tweeter. Now not only in taksim but all over Istanbul people rushed to the streets at that late hour banging on pots and pans to get heard. On the Asian side thousands gathered and walked the 18 km way through the highway via the Bosphrous bridge to Taksim.Although the way was blocked in Beşiktaş with more tear gas they managed to go on somehow.from then on it turned out to be the protests of not only activits but people from all ages and political views against the forcefull decisions of the government.the protests spread to other cities as well even abroad to London and New York where there are lots of Turks living.people are saying NO to the prime minister who calls every dringking person “an alcoholic”,the prime minister who is calling the higher courts decision of stopping the tearing down of the park “absurd”.Turkey wants to stay a democratic republic not a dictatorship.Turkey wants to be a free country where people are not put under arrest due to their articles, books or even tweets.Turkish people want to hear the real news on the TV channels instead of the beauty contests or “miraculous delicacies” cooking programs that were aired on the second day of the protest when the city was “ablaze” with tear gas and banging sounds, marching crowds.Although the prime minister calling the protesters a few “loosers lead astray” there is neither a party nor a leader behind all this commotion.Even the fans of main opposing football teams BEŞİKTAŞ;GALATASARAY and FENERBAHÇE are marching hand in hand against injustice asking for peace and democracy. Now the Turkish people need more than ever the support of their neighbours in order to be heard all over the world
